A great little novel! At a time when every Young Adult author seems to be churning out teenage vampire romance and 'Harry Potter' clones, Carl Joglar is trying something a little different. 'The Perils Of Quad' is the story of Bodi Hawkes, a fairly typical teenager moving through the foster care system. His mom has problems, but is getting her act together. He has his own set of problems he can't seem to resolve, suffering from odd blackouts, waking up somewhere different each time. It turns out he can 'transmogrify' himself from one dimensional form to another, in fact through a series of four other dimensions, hence his being referred to as 'Quad'. But, of course, his life is not already difficult enough and is pursued through this dimension and another by the evil Dr. Maddox who desires an absolute monopoly over Bodi's unique talents. There are strong comicbook elements to this story that should appeal to a wide audience and the writing is quite competent! The hint of romance has a very teenage flavour, enough to enhance the relationships in the story without overshadowing the plot. In other words, it doesn't get in the way. The action is thrilling and fight scenes are well choreographed. On the whole, I found the story fast paced and imaginative. I hope Carl Joglar puts Bodi and his 'team' back together for further adventures.
